Success for UCA men's and women's golfers

MAGNOLIA, Texas — The University of Central Arkansas women’s golf team is tied for first place after one round of the 2014 Southland Conference Championship being played at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club.

Junior Kendra Mann and sophomore Sarah Brown both shots 2-over 74 in the first round and are tied for fourth individually. UCA shot a 16-over 304 and is tied with Lamar. Sam Houston State is third (305), followed by Stephen F. Austin (310), Oral Roberts (311), McNeese State (312), Houston Baptist (314), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (315), Incarnate Word (319) and New Orleans (323).

UCA senior Carly Dear and junior Malin Senneryd both shot 6-over 78 and are tied for 18th place. Sophomore Frida Svennson is tied for 42nd with an 83.

The second round will be played Wednesday, with the final round set for Thursday.

UCA MEN’S GOLF

MADISON, Miss. — University of Central Arkansas junior Pep Angles blew away a strong field at the Ole Miss Reunion Intercollegiate on Tuesday, winning the weather-shortened tournament by three strokes at Reunion Golf and Country Club.

Angles, from Barcelona, Spain, shot rounds of 73-68 for a 3-under 141 to easily beat Houston’s James Ross and Ole Miss’ Blake Morris by three strokes. His 68 was the only round in the 60s in the tournament.

UCA shot rounds of 296-308 to finish tied for seventh place overall. Mississippi State won the tournament at 588, followed by Vanderbilt (592), Houston (593), Ole Miss (596), Western Kentucky (601), Austin Peay (603), UCA and Southern Miss (604), Louisiana (606), Middle Tennessee, Troy and UNC-Greensboro (609), Southeastern Louisiana (610), UMKC (623) and Jackson State (665).

UCA sophomore James Newton tied for 29th (75-77-152), while freshman James Steven tied for 25th (72-81-153). Senior Richard Farmer tied for 52nd (76-82-158) and freshman Ryan Shuttleworth tied for 59th (78-82-160).
