Bears to close spring drills with scrimmage; Longing honored at softball game

The Purple-Gray game, the climactic event of the spring for the University of Central Arkansas football team, will highlight a special day of sports activities.

The spring scrimmage, under the direction of new coach Steve Campbell and his staff, will begin at 3 p.m. at First Security Field at Estes Stadium. The public is invited and there is no admission charge.

Campbell said the scrimmage, the fourth of the spring for the Bears, will match the first and second unit offenses and defenses.

Across campus at Farris Field, the UCA softball team will host Northwestern State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

The Bears will wear orange uniforms and ribbons as part of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day.

Chad Longing, the softball coach at Conway High for 11 seasons who was diagnosed with MS in April of 2012, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Longing compiled a 190-112 record at Conway, including five state semifinal games. An all-star coach in 2011, Longing for 7A Central Coach of the Year in 2011.

Mark Moyer, a redshirt freshman from Russellville who missed the 2016 season with an arm injury, went the distance, allowing just five hits and striking out four to record UCA’s first complete game of the season to lead the University of Central Arkansas to a run-rule, 10-0 victory New Orleans University in the runner game of the three-game series Sunday at Bear Stadium.
