The Sideline: UCA-ASU game rescheduled; Caudle honor and special events for softball

Posted: April 7, 2014 - 4:48pm

The nonconference baseball game between the University of Central Arkansas Bears and the Arkansas State Red Wolves has been moved to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tomlinson Stadium in Jonesboro.

The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday night but has been pushed back a day due to expected inclement weather on Tuesday.

UCA’s Caudle honored for 1-hitter

University of Central Arkansas right hander Chris Caudle earned the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday after throwing a one-hit shutout against Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday.

Caudle, a junior from Greenwood and a transfer from Crowder College, allowed a third-inning infield single as the Lions’ only hit. He retired the final 16 batters of the game, striking out five and walking one.

Caudle, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning earlier this season against Illinois State, improved to 5-2 overall with his third complete game of the season. He lowered his earned-run average to 2.66. Caudle has allowed seven or fewer hits in five of his six starts this season.

UCA beat SLU 3-0 on Saturday in a game that took only 1:35 with Caudle throwing just 97 pitches.

Special events for UCA softball games

The University of Central Arkansas softball team will be hosting a series of special recognitions at their upcoming home games this month, beginning with this weekend’s doubleheader with Southland Conference foe Northwestern State on Saturday.

The Bears will be hosting Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day on Saturday, wearing orange ribbons and orange jerseys to raise awareness of the disease. The game uniforms will be put up for bid in a silent auction to raise funds for MS charity.

The team will follow with Military Appreciation Day on Tuesday, April 15 as the Bears take on ULM. All retired and active-duty military personnel in attendance will be honored prior to the game, with the UCA ROTC Color Guard presenting the colors pregame. The team will wear camouflage jerseys representing all branches of the United States Armed Forces.

For the Bears’ doubleheader with Houston Baptist on the 17th, UCA will host Conway Youth Softball Day that includes a free clinic after the games. Teams are encouraged to wear their team uniforms for the games.

After a midweek game at Oklahoma on April 22 and a weekend series on the road at Incarnate Word on April 25 and 26, the Bears return home for their final series of the regular season on May 3 and 4, hosting Nicholls for Senior Weekend.
