The University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears, in the driver’s seat for a Southland Conference regular-season women’s title a week ago, now find themselves struggling to stay on course.
The UCA women (18-10, 12-5) have lost two games in a row and now are in a must-win situation to grab a share of the regular-season title going into next week’s conference tournament. The Sugar Bears are in a three-way tie for first with Lamar and Stephen F. Austin. They’ll play SFA on Saturday afternoon.
Northwestern State handed UCA its worst loss of the season, 77-45, Thursday night.
Depending on what happens Saturday, the Sugar Bears could either be a No. 1 seed for the conference tournament or fall to No. 4.
The UCA men (8-20, 5-12) finish the season against SFA, undefeated the league play with a 25-game winning streak. It will be the final game for UCA coach Clarence Finley, who was serving as interim coach this season.
Northwestern State (15-13, 11-6) mounted a 72-point onslaught the second half Thursday on the way to a 119-102 victory over the Bears.
LaQuentin Miles scored 34 points for the Bears and had his third straight double-double with 12 rebounds. Freshman Ethan Lee had a career-high 16 points.
