UCA rallies to salvage final game of series against Missouri State

University of Central Arkansas designated hitter Nate Ferrell hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday to propel the Bears to a 6-4 victory over the Missouri State Bears in the series finale at Bear Stadium.

Missouri State won the season-opening series, 3-1.

Ferrell’s single to center field scored Justin Treece and Doug Votolato to break a 4-4 tie and give the Bears (1-2) their first win of the season. Votolato had reached on a throwing error by the MSU shortstop and Treece followed with a base hit to center. Scott Zimmerle walked to load the bases before MSU reliever Adam Anawalt got a strikeout for the second out of the inning.

Ferrell went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Junior transfer Ben Ancheff came on to pitch the ninth for the Bears and set the visiting Bears down in order for his first save. Junior transfer Chris Caudle got the victory with two innings of hitless and scoreless relief. UCA starter Connor Gilmore went six innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs but left with the game tied at 4-4.

Treece went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and is hitting .600 after the opening series. UCA pitchers held MSU to just five hits after allowing 13 and 15 in the previous two games.

UCA faces Wichita State at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Eck Stadium in Wichita.
