The University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears stand alone at the top of the Southland Conference standings after a 73-61 victory over Northwestern State and a loss by Stephen F. Austin to Oral Roberts.
Thursday night at the Farris Center, the Sugar Bears (11-6, 5-1) scored began the second half with a 9-0 to overcome a 29-27 deficit to the Lady Demons (10-8, 3-3), Getting strong inside production from Courtney Duever and good balance all over the court, the UCA women shot 60.9 percent (14 of 23) the second half.
Freshman guard Brianna Mullins led four players in double figures with 23 points and five assists. Duever, a senior post added 19 and 10 rebounds. Maggie Proffitt and Micah Rice had 11 each.
The Sugar Bears committed only seven turnovers.
The Lady Demons’ Trudy Armstead, who had 17 points the first half on seven-of-10 shooting was five of 11 the second half and finished with 29 points, one short of her career high.
The UCA women host SFA at 2 p.m. Saturday.
