University of Central Arkansas coach Clint Conque that quarterbacking for the Bears will likely be by committee in the wake of a season-ending ankle injury to senior Wynrick Smothers.
“In my 30 years of coaching, we’ve never had to replace a quarterback in season who had sustained season-ending injuries; it’s unchartered territory for me,” he said at Monday’s weekly Bearbacker luncheon as the Bears resume Southland Conference play this weekend at Lamar. “But we’ll press on to our goals.”
Senior Ryan Howard has the most knowledge of the offense while Taylor Reed, a transfer from the University of Arkansas who started at Memphis a couple of years ago are the net in line. Wide receiver Jacoby Walker, a converted quarterback, will also be used in some situations.
“Ryan has an excellent grasp of our offense, our run keys and schematics,” Conque said. “We put in some special packages for Taylor last week,” Conque said. “We’re putting thngs together on the fly. Both young men were brought here for a reason.”
He said the Bears will have to make up for the loss by playing better in other areas.
