Defending regular-season and conference tournament champion Central Arkansas has been picked to win the 2013 Southland Conference regular-season championship by a vote of the league’s coaches and sports information directors, the conference announced Wednesday.
Central Arkansas received eight first-place votes and 117 points in the coaches’ poll, while compiling six first-place votes and 115 points in the SID poll. The Sugar Bears received majority of the first-place votes with 14 out of a possible 24 between both polls. Sam Houston State received the second-most first-place votes with seven among the two polls followed by Oral Roberts which received two.
UCA, under the direction of third-year coach David McFatrich, enjoyed its best season last year compiling a school record 30 wins. The Sugar Bears claimed their third Southland Conference regular-season title in four years and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. Central Arkansas will be led by returning all-conference players Marissa Collins, Alicia Dittrich and senior Jessica Nagy.
