Bears sweep softball doubleheader from SFA
The University of Central Arkansas softball team got a shutout, then came from behind to sweep a doubleheader Saturday from Stephen F. Austin to open Southland Conference play at Farris Field.
Kelsie Armstrong threw a two-hitter and struck out 13 in leading the Bears (18-6, 2-0) over the Lady Jacks (6-15, 0-2), 3-0. Melissa Bryant had two hits and two RBI and a home run for the Bears.
Down 7-1, the Bears scored five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for a 11-8 victory.
Greenbrier’s Cicely New (2-0) was the winning pitcher in relief.
Sarah Bigej was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Lindsey Elliot was 2 for 3 with two runs. Lissa Avitia was 2 for 4 with two runs. Amy Gunnells was 2 for 2 with two RBI.
The teams finished the series Sunday afternoon.
