MACON, Ga. — The University of Central Arkansas softball team stretched its winning streak to eight games Friday in the Mercer Classic.
The Bears defeated Tennessee-Chattanooga, 8-0, then downed Mercer 8-5 in 10 innings.
Kelsie Armstrong (8-4) got the complete game victory for the Bears against UTC, giving up one hit and walking two while striking out six.
In the 10th ining against Mercer, the Bears scord four times. Central Arkansas grabbed four runs in the top of the tenth inning. A sacrifice bunt advanced Sarah Bigej, who had been placed at second under the tiebreaker rule, to third. Lissa Avitia picked up an RBI when a throwing error allowed her to reach first base and brought in Bigej. Sam Forrest doubled to left-center field, driving in two runs. Melissa Bryant singled her home.
Ciara Clampitt got the start for Central Arkansas, working 4.2 innings of five-hit, three-run ball. Cicely New of Greenbrier earned her first win of the season, throwing three innings and giving up two hits and an unearned run while striking out two.
