Bears to hold first major scrimmage Saturday

Posted: March 29, 2012 - 4:55pm

The University of Central Arkansas Bears will hold their first major football scrimmage of the spring at 4 p.m. Saturday at First Security Field at Estes Stadium.

The Bears resumed spring practice this week after a week off for Spring Break. UCA coach Clint Conque has been pleased thus far how the Bears have regained their focus after the layoff.

He said the coaching staff will be looking for efficiency from the Bears on Saturday.

“It’s our first major scrimmage so we want to see execution and consistency,” said Conque, who is heading into his 13th season at UCA. “Our goals are to be more efficient in the run game and to defend the run better.

“We need to identify leadership on both offense and defense. And we need to become a more physical football team. That’s something we learned from our postseason experience in the Division I playoffs last season. You have to play fast and physical.

“We hope to take a major step on Saturday.”

The scrimmage will feature Southland Conference officials and is expected to feature between 105 to 120 plays.

The scrimmage is free and open to the public. The Bears will also scrimmage Saturday, April 7, before holding their annual Purple/Gray spring game at 6 p.m. Friday, April 13.
