The University of Central Arkansas women’s track team finished fourth and the men’s team 10th Sunday at the 2014 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.
On the strength of 18 points from sophomore Brooke Cassar and 16 from senior Erika Setzler of Conway, the UCA women finished with 68 points, edging McNeese State for fourth. The Sam Houston State women and the Southeastern Louisiana men claimed team titles. The wins give each squad a sweep of the conference’s indoor and outdoor championships in 2014.
The Bearkats won their fourth overall outdoor championship and first since 2008 and snapped a five-year win streak by rival Stephen F. Austin. The Southeastern men added a second outdoor award to the trophy case to go with their title in 2009.
Sam Houston claimed a dominant 40.5-point victory in totaling 176 points during the three-day meet. SFA finished second with 135.5 points. Northwestern State scored 75 points in a third-place finish, while host Central Arkansas (67.5) and McNeese State (67) rounded out the top five women’s teams.
Southeastern earned its one-point win on the final event of the meet. Trailing only SFA entering the men’s 4x400-meter relay, the Lions needed to finish among the top-two teams, which would give them enough points for the victory. They finished second behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to earn eight points for a 157-156 victory. Sam Houston State finished third with 96 points, while Abilene Christian finished fourth with 63 points in its Southland debut. Lamar and Northwestern State tied for fifth, each totaling 57 points.
For UCA, Sophomore Corentin Louis finished second in the 1,500 meters and UCA’s men’s 4x400 relay team of Trevon Boyd, Kelton Ray, Dustie Smith and Chance Tanner finished third to give the Bears 31 total points.
UCA’s Tanesha Maxwell was second in the 100 meters in 11.65 while Jordan Chadwick was third in the 800 meters in 2:13.25. Marina Lecart finished third in the 1,500 meters in 4:32.73, while Kayla Nehus was seventh (4:42.12).
Cassar and Setzler, already individual champions earlier in the meet in the 10,000 meters and 3,000 steeplechase, respectively, finished second and third in the 5,000 meters on Sunday.
Cassar ran a 17:43.22 while Setzler finished in 18:03.00. UCA’s 4x100 relay team of Anilah Bashir, Tiauna Jefferson, Kiara Armstrong and Maxwell was sixth in 46.22. The 4x400 relay squad of Jasmine Johnson, Khadijah Smith, Jordan Chadwick and Jean Black was seventh (3:48.03). Fulani Petties tied for fifth in the high jump at 1.65 meters.
On the men’s side, Tanner finished eighth in the 400 meters in a time of 51:07. In the 5,000 meters, Jonathan Burgess was seventh in 15:24.69. UCA’s 4x100 relay team of Ethan Bly, Ben Barker, Chance Tanner and Kelton Ray finished seventh (42.03).
