Lions shut out Bears in series opener

Southeastern Louisiana junior Andro Cuturo held the University of Central Arkansas Bears to  three hits Friday night in a 6-0 shutout in Southland Conference action at Bear Stadium.

Cuturo (5-1) struck out seven and walked just one in the complete-game victory. UCA freshman designated hitter Joey Pinney had two of UCA’s three hits, with a second-inning double and a fourth-inning single. After Carson Dowdle’s base hit in the fifth inning, Cuturo did not allow another base runner until Austin White walked with two out in the ninth.

UCA senior Bryce Biggerstaff (2-3), in his first start since an elbow injury last month, allowed eight hits and three earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. SLU (19-11, 6-4) finished with 10 hits, including two each fromr Jameson Fisher and  Jacob Williams.

The Lions, who broke UCA’s five-game home winning streak, scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, then added four more to put the game away in the eighth.

The Bears (16-11, 5-5) were playing without three players and an assistant coach, who were serving suspensions for their involvement in Tuesday night’s incident that took place in the Arkansas-Little Rock game. UCA head coach Allen Gum also served a voluntary one-game suspension Friday night.
