UCA's season ends as SFA completes perfect conference run

NACOGDOCHES, Texas _ The University of Central Arkansas' two seniors, LaQuentin Miles and DeShone McClure, combined for 39 points in their career finale on Saturday night in an 85-61 loss to league champion Stephen F. Austin at Johnson Coliseum.

The Jacksonville High School duo ended as UCA's leading scorers on the season, with Miles averaging 23.2 and McClure 13 points per game. Miles finished his UCA career with 1,289 points, the 21st player in UCA history to top 1,000 points. 

The Lumberjacks (29-2) completed a perfect 18-0 run through the Southland Conference with their 32nd straight home victory. Thomas Walkup led SFA with 24 points, shooting seven of nine from the field and nine of 10 from the free-throw line. Desmond Haymon added 20 points, while Jacob Parker had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bears trailed 42-30 at halftime, with Miles and McClure combining for 20 of the Bears' points. But the Lumberjacks began to pull away quickly in the second half and led by as much as 29 points at the 8:00 mark.

The Lumberjacks, riding a 25-game winning streak, shot 51.9 percent from the field in the second half and dominated the rebounding, beating the Bears 40-21 on the boards, including 16 offensive re bounds. SFA also made eight 3-pointers, four by Haymon, while UCA was four of 12. McClure connected on three of five from beyond the arc to give him a team-high 51 3s for the season.

SFA will be the top seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas.

Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports regional tournaments begin April 28

JACKSONVILLE – Student athletes from across Arkansas will gather at the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation Shooting Sports Complex in Jacksonville each weekend, beginning April 28, to take their shots at the regional and state championship tournaments of the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program.
