Angles medalist at Louisiana tourney

CHOUDRANT, La. — University of Central Arkansas junior Pep Angles won medalist honors Tuesday at the Louisiana Tech Argent Financial Classic at a cold and windy Squire Creek Country Club.


Angles, from Barcelona, Spain, followed up his 2-under 70 on Monday with an even-par 72 for a 142 total that topped Sam Houston State’s Albert Miner by one stroke. Angles’ finish led UCA to an eighth-place finish overall at 309-299-608.


Sophomore James Newton shot 74-73-147 and tied for ninth overall. Freshman James Steven tied for 30th at 78-74-152, while senior Richard Farmer finished 72nd (89-80-169) and freshman Ben Taylor was 73rd (87-85-172).

North Texas (586) edged host Louisiana Tech (588) for first place overall. Sam Houston State was third (594), followed by Southeastern Louisiana (597), Louisiana-Lafayette (598), Texas State (599), Louisiana-Monroe (603), UCA (608), New Orleans (620), UALR and Rice (624), Arkansas State (625) and Missouri State (638).

Mark Moyer, a redshirt freshman from Russellville who missed the 2016 season with an arm injury, went the distance, allowing just five hits and striking out four to record UCA’s first complete game of the season to lead the University of Central Arkansas to a run-rule, 10-0 victory New Orleans University in the runner game of the three-game series Sunday at Bear Stadium.
