Almost for UCA pitcher

Junior righthander Chris Caudle carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday night and the University of Central Arkansas Bears beat Illinois State 7-0 to win for the second time on the day.

The Bears (6-4) came back from a 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning to beat North Dakota 4-3 in the first game of the day.

Caudle, a junior transfer from Greenwood and Crowder College, was perfect through six innings and then recorded the first two outs of the seventh on ground balls before allowing consecutive infield singles. Caudle then struck out Joe Kelch for the final out of the frame in his first career start. He struck out three more batters in the eighth inning to give him a career-high eight for the game.

Doug Votolato finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Tyler Langley of Conway was 2 for 4 with three RBI. Sophomore Bo Stitch pitched the ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.

UCA, which went 3-0 on the weekend, hosts UT Martin at 4 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bear Stadium.
