Preseason hoops team named for SLC

FRISCO, Texas – Two players who earned All-Southland Conference honors at the end of last season return to highlight the official 2013-14 preseason all-conference teams, announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Nicholls, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi also placed a player on the two preseason squads.

The two returning all-conference players — Northwestern State senior forward DeQuan Hicks and Oral Roberts senior guard/forward Shawn Glover – were automatic selections to the preseason teams, leaving eight spots available for the league’s coaches to select.

They are joined on the first team by Northwestern State sophomore guard Jalan West, Stephen F. Austin senior guard Desmond Haymon and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior guard John Jordan.

The second-team preseason all-conference squad consists of McNeese State forward Desharick Guidry and guard Kevin Hardy, Sam Houston State forward James Thomas, Nicholls guard Dantrell Thomas and SFA forward Jacob Parker.

Hendrix’s Shannon gets D3 honor

Hendrix College redshirt freshman safety Caleb Shannon was named to the D3Football.com National Team of the Week on Wednesday.

Shannon recorded two interceptions, eight tackles and a pair of pass breakups in Saturday’s 30-17 win over Berry. Shannon, from The Woodlands, Texas, returned his first interception 13 yards to the Vikings’ 9, setting up the Warriors’ first touchdown of the game in the second quarter. His second interception came in the end zone during the third quarter, leading to a Hendrix touchdown on their ensuing drive.

Shannon was also named the Southern Athletic Association’s Defensive Player of the Week.
