JACKSON, Miss. – Rhodes College ended the season for the Hendrix College women's basketball team Saturday, taking a 62-49 victory in the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association's women's tournament at the HangarDome.
The sixth-seeded Warriors (5-22) won four of their last six games of the year, knocking off regular season co-champion Centre on Friday night to advance to the next round.
The Lynx (23-3), the second seed and also a co-champion, will take on the other co-champ, host Millsaps in the tourney finals on Sunday.
Rhodes led most of the first half and had a 28-21 advantage at the 5:33 mark. Hendrix answered with a 7-0 run, getting five points from junior Jamie Tate, to tie the game 28-28 with 1:36 before the break. Sara Womack scored the final five points of the half to give the Lynx a 33-28 lead at the break.
Tied at 35-35 with 17:24 to play, Rhodes went on an 12-1 run over the next 3:24 to take control of the game. The Lynx maintained at least a nine-point lead throughout the rest of the contest.
Hendrix shot 41.5 percent (17-of-41) from the field, 1-of-8 from 3-point range and 14-of-22 at the free-throw line. Rhodes shot 34 percent (23-of-68), 4-of-25 from outside and 12-of-13 at the line. The Lynx also had a 40-31 rebound advantage. The Warriors committed 17 turnovers, leading to 27 points for the Lynx.
Tate led Hendrix with a season-high 22 points and 13 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the year. Freshman Katy Gallien had seven points and sophomore guard Kati Broberg scored six. Junior forward Katie Coughran scored five points and dished out three assists. Freshman guard Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler had four assists.
