NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin's Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks claimed two home victories Thursday night against University of Central Arkansas basketball teams.
The league-leading men's team (19-2, 10-1) cruised to a 72-36 victory over the Bears (9-12, 4-7).
UCA (9-12, 4-7) entered with the ninth-best scoring offense in the nation at 78.7 points per game, while SFA was No. 1 in scoring defense, allowing just 49.5. The defense prevailed Thursday as UCA shot just 31.3 percent overall and a mere 15.4 percent (2 of 13) from 3-point range.
“We didn’t come out and match their intensity, nor their energy," said UCA head coach Corliss Williamson. “They are very physical here at home and they took us out of everything we wanted to do, offensively and defensively. “It was just an embarrassing performance by our team tonight."
In the women's game, the Ladyjacks (10-12, 5-6) handed the Sguar Bears (13-9, 6-5) their third straight defeat and fourth in their last five games, 53-48.
"I thought the effort was there, but the only thing I can say is dumb basketball," said UCA head coach Sandra Rushing. "We've got to make smart decisions down the stretch. We're not blocking out, we're giving up second and third shots. We had our chance down the stretch."
Both UCA teams continue their road swing Saturday afternoon at Northwestern State.
