Hendrix College men’s soccer head coach Doug Mello picked up his 700th career victory as the Warriors (3-0-1) topped LeTourneau University (0-4) 4-0 at home on Saturday evening.
Mello, in his fifth season at Hendrix and 36th as a head collegiate soccer coach, has won 418 games while coaching men’s teams (32 at Hendrix) and another 282 while coaching women in his storied career. He has also coached 1,126 collegiate contests, more than anyone else in history.
For the fourth consecutive game, Hendrix posted a shutout. Freshman goalkeeper Marco Luna tied the school record with his fourth shutout while posting five saves against the YellowJackets. The Guatemala City native has spent 380 consecutive scoreless minutes in goal to begin his career.
Senior defender Dylan Reed opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick. In the second half, senior midfielder Tresor Mukiza scored in the 66th minute on a sweeping corner kick. Just 48 seconds later, senior Grant Womack threw the ball in to senior Connor Silvestri who sent a scissor kick in for the score.
