UCA's Landers slated for surgery

Posted: August 12, 2009 - 2:11pm

University of Central Arkansas wide receiver Willie Landers, injured in a shorts-and-helmets drill on the opening day of preseason practice, is slated to have knee surgery Tuesday, UCA coach Clint Conque said.

Conque said he will not know until after the surgery how long Landers will be out. The Bears began two-a-day drills in full pads Wednesday. Landers was on the sideline in shorts but appeared to move about freely.

Landers, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound junior, is  the Bears' leading returning receiver with 44 catches for 735 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

Although several players were held out of drills today, Landers is the only one right to expected to miss some major practice time.

UCA will have its first major scrimmage of the season at 7 Sunday night.
