Conway High got help from a veteran starter and a substitute Friday night on the way to a 49-39 boys basketball victory over Cabot.
Tim Boys, who had 10 points, hit a jumper to give Conway a 41-37 lead late in the game. Sub Justin Leon got a tipin and made a free throw for a seven’point lead. He then scored inside and Garan Davis hit a 3-pointer to help the Wampus Cats pull away.
The Cats are upped their record to 14-17 and passed the Panthers (12-5, 3-5) in the 7A/6A Central standings at 4-4.
Kevin Guiden also had 10 points. Leon, 6-foot-5, added nine rebounds and five blocks to go with his nine points.
Cabot stayed among the conference leaders in the girls game with a 69-54 victory.
ST. JOSEPH
POYEN — Heather Moix scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds Friday night in leading St. Joseph’s girls to a 44-43 victory over Poyen.
Meagan Briggler added nine points. Courtney Briggler had seven points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. Jennifer Hegeman had four assists and three steals. Rachel Briggler had six assists for the Lady Bulldogs (21-7, 9-3).
“This was a solid conference road win,” said St. Joseph coach Chris Kordsmeier. Poyen is a tough place to play. We needed to make some good plays late in the game.”
Poyen won the senior boys game, 47-33.
Drew Bates had 15 points and three assists for the Bulldogs (20-8, 6-6). Andrew Kordsmeier had nine points and six rebounds. Drake Coooper had five points and seven rebounds. Cole Schichtl had 11 rebounds.
“We had a tough shooting night,” said St. Joseph coach Brent Bruich. “They had a lot to do with it. We will learn from this.”
VILONIA
VILONIA — Vilonia’s senior girls moved to 6-2 in 5A-West with a 39-22 victory over Huntsville on Friday night.
Colleen Farris led the Lady Eagles with 12 points. Audrey Moran had eight and Alaina Riley added si. Lydia Gordon had five points and six rebounds.
The Eagles will host Greenbrier on Tuesday.
The senior boys went two overtimes for a 58-51 win over Huntsville.
Trevor Martin led the Eagles with 26 points. Jacob Greer, four for seven on 3-pointers, added 12. Cotton Johnson was four for four on free throws in the fourth quarter on the way to six points.
HENDRIX MEN
The University of Dallas defeated the Hendrix men, 74-65, Friday night at Grove Gymnasium.
The Warriors (5-15, 4-8) led the entire first half. An 18-3 run by the Crusaders (7-14, 5-7) midway through the first half to take control. During that stretch, Dallas was eight of 11 from the field, including two three-point plays.
Nick Heathscott paced the Warriors with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting and a season-high 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Ammon Martin scored 16 points to go with five boards and five assists. Graham, from Clinton, Ark. scored a career-best 10 points and Goodman added five points and four assists. Primm also recorded 13 rebounds.
Before the game, the Warriors honored their four seniors – guard Chris Goodman, Graham, a forward, Heathscott, a center from St. Joseph, and Martin, a guard from Conway. They were responsible for 53 of Hendrix’ 65 points.
The Warriors will play their final SCAC home game of the season on Sunday when they host Austin College at 3 p.m.
HENDRIX WOMEN
For the second time this season, 40 minutes was not enough for the Hendrix College and the University of Dallas women’s basketball teams.
On Jan. 6 in Irving, Texas, the Warriors came out on top 90-85 in overtime, but the Lady Crusaders avenged their loss with a 71-60 victory in extra time on Friday at Grove Gymnasium.
UD (7-13, 3-9 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) outscored Hendrix (6-14, 5-7) 14-3 in the second half, shooting 4-of-6 from the field and five fof six from the free-throw line. The Warriors were just 1-of-6 from the field and 1-of-4 from the line.
Hendrix led 55-48 with just 39 seconds remaining in regulation after a jumper from freshman forward Maggie Biggs-Scribner. Junior guard Kylie Yoshimura, who scored 42 points for UD in the first matchup, hit a 3-pointer five seconds later to cut the lead to four. After senior guard Avery Roller went one for two at the line, Lauren Jumaoas also hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 56-54 with 19 seconds left. Senior guard Anna Roane made a free throw with 16 seconds left to put the Warriors up by four, but Yoshimura was fouled on a three-point attempt with second seconds remaining, and she made all three free throws to force the overtime.
Roane paced the Warriors with 18 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Senior guard Katy Ashley-Pauley scored nine points and dished out four assists. Sophomore forward Jamie Tate scored eight points and grabbed 21 boards, her fourth 20-plus rebound game of the season and her 15th consecutive double-digit game. Freshman guard Lindsay Drillette recorded season-highs with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Senior guard Samantha Devlin came off the bench to score seven points and pull down six boards.
Yoshimura ended with 25 points on 8-of-22 shooting and seven assists.
The Warriors will host Austin College on Sunday at 1 p.m. Before the game, the five seniors will be honored – Roane, Ashley-Pauley, Roller, Devlin and Erin McKinney.
GREENBRIER GIRLS
GREENBRIER — Ali Rowden scored 21 points Friday night to lead Greenbrier to a 54-51 victory over Siloam Springs at Panther Pavilion.
The Lady Panthers upped their record to 9-13, 3-5 while the Lady Panthers gell to 14-8, 5-3). Megan Nolen added 12 for Greenbrier.
FAULKNER FALCONS
The Faulkner County Falcons downed the Faith Crusaders of Fort Smith, 58-38, Friday night in homeschool basketball.
Mark Baker, Isaac Stanton and Daniel McNair each had 10 points for Falcons. Carter Mayo had nine points and Trent Wolf chipped in seven points.
Graduating seniors Caleb Lawrence & Phillip Baker were recognized in a pregame ceremony.
