Davenport gets preseason honor


University of Central Arkansas pitcher Cody Davenport has beeebn named a preseason second-team All-Southland Conference baseball selection.

Davenport, a sophomore from Fayetteville, finished 6-2 with a 3.21 earned-run average last season as a weekend freshman starter for the Bears. He tossed 101 innings over 15 starts, with the team going 10-5 in his 15 startrs. He had one complete game and one combined shutout. Davenport struck out 71 and walked 25, with opponents hitting .284 against him.

Davenport also played the outfield and served as designated hitter for the Bears, with three starts in right field and eight as DH.

The Bears, who fnished 29-27 last season, open the 2017 season at home at 3 p.m. Friday against the University of Evansville. The series continues at 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

UA sets time for Red-White game

FAYETTEVILLE - The Arkansas Razorbacks’ annual Red-White game closing spring football practice on April 29 at Reynolds Razorback Stadium will kick off at noon and be televised live on the SEC Network, the University of Arkansas announced Tuesday.

Fans attending the football game should have time to attend the Arkansas vs. Ole Miss SEC baseball game scheduled for 4 p.m., April 29 at Baum Stadium.

The Razorbacks will start using their 15 allotted spring football practice dates last week in March, Arkansas coach Bret Bielema has said.
