Conway gymnasts place in meets

BOYS

The Sonshine Academy Boys gymnastics team kicked off the season by competing in the Didion Athletics Invitational in Van Buren in November the Valeri Liukin Invitational in Dallas in December.

In the individual competition, 15 Sonshine gymnasts either won or placed in the top three in individual events or the all-around in their level and age group.

In the Level 4 team division, Sonshine was second. Level 4 team members are Aidan Bird, Cade Nielsen, Futa Shinkawa, Gabe Willis, Jesse Easley, and Kent Nielsen.

Aidan Bird placed first on vault, third on floor, pommel horse, rings and in the all-around.

Nielsen won the vault and was second on the high bar. Shinkawa placed first on the floor, pommel horse, vault, high bar, and in the all-around and second on parallel bars.

Willis placed second on the vault. Easley placed third on the floor, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, high bar, and in the all-around. Nielsen placed first on the rings and vault, third on the high bar, second on the pommel horse and in the all-around.

The Level 5 division had five Sonshine gymnasts: Andrew Hare, Colton Ray, John Sutton, Josh Barbee, and Michael Frost. They took home third place in the team competition.

Hare placed third on the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, high bar, and in the all-around and second on the parallel bars. Ray placed third on the floor; and first on the pommel horse, rings, vault, and in the all-around.

Sutton placed third on the vault. Barbee placed third on floor, parallel bars, high bar, and in the all-around; and second on the pommel horse. Frost placed third on the rings and high bar and second on the parallel bars.

Sonshine had two Level 6 gymnasts compete at Didion’s and four at the Valeri Liukin Invitational.

Blake Hopkins and Haden Ray competed at Didion’s. Hopkins was fourthh on the floor. Haden Ray placed second on the rings and first on the floor, pommel horse, vault, parallel bars, high bar, and in the all-around. Hopkins, Cullen Odom, Ray, and Jay Krisell all competed at the Valeri Liukin Invitational in Dallas. Odom placed seventh on the pommel horse. Ray placed fifth on the vault and in the all-around; third on the pommel horse and second on the parallel bars. Krisell placed third on the pommel horse.

Sonshine had two Level 9 gymnasts compete at both meets; Jake Fisher and Michael Rickels. At Didion’s, Fisher placed second on the floor and rings and first on the pommel horse, vault, parallel bars, high bar, and in the all-around. At Didion’s Michael Rickles placed second on the pommel horse, vault, parallel bars, high bar, and in the all-around, and first on the floor and rings.

The head boys team coaches are Bubba Corbitt, Michael Stage, and Jordan Bell.

GIRLS

The Level 4 through 8 girls gymnastics team from Sonshine Academy competed at the Pepsi Challenge Invitational in Hot Springs in December.

The Level 5 team of Payton Leach, Abigail Robinson, Madeline Anderson and Anna Kathleen Harris won first, scoring 99.65, just ahead of Jacksonville Gymnastics at 99.125.

In team competition at other levels, Sonshine’s Level 4 team placed third, and the Level 6 team placed fourth.

In individual competition, three Sonshine gymnasts earned first-place all-around titles, and six gymnasts earned a total of nine individual event titles.

Individual event winners:

Level 4: Lily Douglas, bars, floor; Emma Henry (11), bars; Bethany Stubbs (15), beam

Level 5: Payton Leach (11B yrs), bars, beam; Abigail Robinson (11A yrs) bars, beam

Level 6: Jillian Cliburn (13), vault

Top 3 finishers:

Level 4: Melaina Taylor (10), 3rd vault, bars, and floor; Emma Henry (11), third, beam

Level 5: Madeline Anderson (12), second, vault; Anna Kathleen Harris (12), 3rd (tie) vault, third, floor

Level 6: Paige Johnson (15), third, bars

Level 8: Taylor Joe-Conway (13) second, (tie) vault, second, bars
