University of Central Arkansas punter Kevin Buford was named the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts against Lamar University on Saturday.
Buford, a senior from Greenville, Miss., punted four times for a career-high 47.5-yard average in UCA’s 24-14 victory over Lamar at First Security Field at Estes Stadium.
Buford had punts of 42, 51, 49 and 48 yards, pinning the Cardinals on their own 5 with one first-quarter punt. Buford is fifth in the SLC in punting with a 40.4-yard average.
The player of the week honor was UCA’s ninth this season, the most in the conference through eight weeks of play.
FRISCO, Texas — The Southland Conference has imposed one-game suspensions for football players Darius Taylor of Sam Houston State and Kevin Roberts of Southeastern Louisiana for targeting and initiating contact to the head or neck area of defenseless players during their team’s games on Oct. 13.
After a review by the conference’s executive committee, both players will be suspended for games scheduled Oct. 27, Taylor during Sam Houston State’s game at Lamar, and Roberts during Southeastern Louisiana’s game vs. Central Arkansas.
The NCAA football playing rules require conferences to automatically review video of unnecessary roughness acts that target the head or neck to determine if additional sanctions are necessary, whether or not officials call a penalty at the time.
“As called for by the NCAA playing rules, the conference has confirmed the violations as targeted hits to head and neck area of a defenseless player,” Southland commissioner Tom Burnett said.
“The Southland always strives to ensure the safety and well-being of its student-athletes and will adhere to all NCAA playing rules during competition.”
