The Sideline: Clements volleyball honor; Smothers on Payton watch list



Hendrix College senior middle blocker Melissa Clement has been named the Southern Athletic Association Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week.

Clement averaged 3.82 kills per set and hit .341 as the Warriors went 3-2 on the week. The Rogers native hit .533 with 11 kills against Rust and added another 13 kills against Central Baptist on Tuesday. On Saturday, she registered 14 kills in a five-set loss to Centre. Clement ended the week by hitting .541 with a season-high 21 kills in a three-set sweep of Sewanee. She also recorded 22 blocks for a 1.29 per set average and broke the school career record this week with a total of 319 total blocks.



University of Central Arkansas quarterback Wynrick Smothers has been added to the Payton Award watch list, the Heisman Trophy equivalent for players in NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.

Smothers’ 281.2 yards of total offense per game rank 12th in the FCS. One of the nation’s more efficient passers, Smothers ranks 16th in passing efficiency (165.54 rating) and has completed over 66 percent of his passes. Smothers has completed 110 of 166 passes this season for 1,217 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is also UCA’s second-leading rusher with 189 yards and 2 touchdowns.

UCA’s last Payton Award finalist was quarterback Nathan Brown in 2008. Brown is in his third season as UCA’s quarterbacks coach.

The Payton Award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries after the regular season on Nov. 19. The top three vote-getters will be invited to the FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation on Dec. 17 in Philadelphia.



CHOUDRANT, La. _ The University of Central Arkansas’ men’s golf team won its second tournament of the fall season on Tuesday, taking a four-stroke victory over Southern Mississippi in the Louisiana Tech Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at Squire Creek.

Sophomore Pep Angles continued his solid play, finishing second overall with rounds of 67-71-69 for a 9-under 207. Louisiana Tech’s Travis Wilmore shot a 206 to edge Angles, who was coming off a victory two weeks ago at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate. UCA shot rounds of 296-283-290 for a 5-over 869, beating Southern Miss (873) and host Louisiana Tech (876). Jacksonville State was fourth (882), followed by Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston State (883), UMKC and Houston Baptist (886), Rice (892), Texas State and Nevada (897), Nicholls State (931), New Orleans (937) and McNeese State (948).

Sophomore David Morago tied for fifth, shooting 76-66-71-213, while freshman James Newton shot 75-77-73-225 and tied for 31st. Senior Austen Moix tied for 42nd at 78-74-77-229.


Ruth Doyle Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team downed Beebe 25-16, 25-13 Monday.

Ashley Wilson led with nine aces while Bailey Glover followed with six. Olivia Cummins contributed two digs.

The B team won, 25-17,25-20. Alyssa Dubois had eight aces and Taylor Arnold had five.
