Jonathan Woodard earned the University of Central Arkansas’ sixth player of the week award in the first five weeks of the season on Monday when he was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Woodard, a 6-foot-5, 251-pound redshirt freshman defensive end from Brentwood, Tenn., forced two fumbles and recovered three fumbles, returning one 72 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown that brought the Bears within one score with 4:29 remaining. He also had two tackles for loss among his five stops in UCA’s 42-37 loss at Stephen F. Austin.
UCA has had a least one of the three conference players of the week in five consecutive weeks this season. Woodard is the second The Bears return home this weekend, hosting Nicholls State at 6 p.m. for Hall of Fame Weekend.
Alma defeated Greenbrier, 25-7, 25-18, 25-9, in volleyball last week.
Kenzie Batterton had three kills and four blocks. Savannah Baker added two kills and Mackenzie Burrow 14 digs. Payton Starkey was seven of seven on serves.
Alma won the JV game, 25-23, 25-18. Baker was eight of eight on serves with three kills. Katie Jones and Heather Wilcox were also perfect on serves.
In a jamboree last weekend at Vilonia, Ruth Doyle Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team won two games against Greenbrier and Beebe, but lost to Morrilton.
Madison Hefner led Ruth Doyle in aces with eight, while Bailey Glover followed with seven.
The B team girls won two games against Morrilton and Beebe, but lost a rally to Greenbrier. Katelyn Anderson, Lacey Simpson, and Hannah Martin all had four aces for the day.
