The Sideline: Conway volleyball, Wynrick Smothers Player of Week

FAYETTEVILLE — Valley View def Conway 25-12, 25-13, in the first round of Gold Bracket play Saturday in an invitational tournament at Fayetteville High School.

 

Sara Stovall had eight kills and Sara Nethercutt 18 assists for the Lady Cats (12-4). Rachel Skinner had two aces and Nethercutt and Skinner, six digs each. Jade Benton and Stovall had two blocks.

To reach the championship roundm Conway went 2-1 in pool play.

The Lady Cats downed Carthage, 22-25, 25-21, 19-17. Stovall had 22 kills and Bailey McKee 26 assists and two aces. Abby Mann had 12 digs. Benton had two blocks.

Conway defeated Greenwood, 24-26, 25-20, 15-10. Stovall had 22 kills Pool Play

Washburn Rural defeated Conway 25-16; 25-18. Outstanding players were: Skinner and Molly Shipp, one ace apiede; Stovall, seven kills; Nethercutt, five assists; McKee, eight assists; and Skinner, seven digs.

The Lady Cats play at home Tuesday against Mount St. Mary and Thursday home against Russellville.

Central Arkansas junior quarterback Wynrick Smothers, who led the Bears to a 24-20 victory over Sam Houston State, has been named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Smothers engineered two scoring drives in the final 6:03 (the last with no timeouts) to give the Bers the victory over the No. 3 Bearkats. The junior from Destrehan, La., scored the first touchdown on a 17-yard run at the 3:18 mark, then hit Dominique Croom for 41 yards, and again from 26 yards out for the game-winner with 57 seconds left. Smothers completed 24-of 41 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a 30-yard touchdown pass in the first half and finished 40 rushing yards on 10 carries.

It was the third time this season that Smothers has earned a Player of the Week honor.
