The University of Central Arkansas men’s soccer team is ranked 10th in the National Soccer Coaches of American Midwest Regional poll, for the first time.
“It’s certainly exciting when you step into new territory with a program, but we aren’t content to just be ranked regionally, we want to continue to step forward,” said UCA coach Ross Duncan.
“The rankings aren’t our focus, and they won’t be, but it’s good for the boys to get recognition for the work that they’ve put in.”
The Bears, who are 4-1, play Friday at Eastern Illinois.
Hendrix College junior field hockey player Elizabeth Lancaster and freshman men’s soccer player Marco Luna were both named the Southern Athletic Association’s Defensive Player of the Week for their respective sports on Tuesday.
Lancaster, from Dover, Del., helped contribute to a pair of shutouts and a 0.67 goals against average as the Warriors opened the season 2-1. She also recorded three assists, including two in a 3-0 win at Earlham on Sept. 2
Luna opened his collegiate career with four consecutive shutouts, spending 380 scoreless minutes in goal as the Warriors started the year 3-0-1. The Guatemala City native recorded 15 saves in the first four games and has since broken the school season record with five shutouts to earn the Defensive Player of the Week award.
