Bears slip into conference tourney

In a wild development in the Southland Conference late Saturday night, the University of Central Arkanss men's basketball team, who originally thought its season had ended with a loss to Northwestern State, is now in as the No. 8 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament this week.

The eighth spot had orginally been awarded to Nicholls by the conference office.

The Bears ended in a five-way tie for eighth place, and as the scenarios played out, it was determined they earned the  8th seed over Nicholls. The new bracket was sent out over social media about 11 p.m. Saturday The conference apologized for initially sending out incorrect information about the tiebreaker, which got extremely complicated with five teams tied with 7-11 conference records. It was further complicated by two of the five 7-11 teams, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word, were ineligible for the postseason.

UCA will face No. 5 Sam Houston State at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, on ESPN3. The UCA women will play in the semifinals Saturday afternoon.
