Here’s another serving of “David’s Appetizers,” assorted musing from the sports scene:
With Saturday’s victory over Sam Houston State by the Bears, no Southland Conference team has a winning series record against the University of Central Arkansas football team.
The Bears are also the winnigest team in the league since they joined the conference 12 years ago.
The University of Central Arkansas volleyball team plays perhaps one of its biggest matches of the season Thursday night against Southland Conference leader Texas A&M-Corpus Christian at the Prince Center.
The Islanders have a 44-game regular-season winning streak in the SLC.
The Sugar Bears are 14-2.
“We are getting better and better in following the game plan — taking info and processing info,” said UCA coach Jeni Jones Chatman. “The different in this team the last two years is this team play with a lot of passion and a lot of chemistry.”
The Sam Houston perspective
UCA coach Steve Campbell was highly complimentary of the Estes Stadium crowd (in excess of 11,000) Saturday night in the victory over third-ranked Sam Houston State, which earned the Bears a No. 6 ranking this week in the STATS FCA poll.
Sam Houston State coach KC Keeler, whose team had a 12-game conference winning streak snapped, concurred.
“UCA took a great crowd and ignited it,” said Keller after the Bears took a 34-17 lead. “They did a little bit what we did in against Nicholls on our bye week. They (the Bears) came out focused and ready to play.”
Tracey Patton, the wife of former UCA quarterback Daryl Patton, died suddenly last week.
Patton, currently, the head coach at Bauxite High School, has coached at Bryant and Fayetteville.
Funeral services will be Thursday in Bryant.
