Cats ready to go against a different opponent

Conway running back Michael George fights his way through the Wampus Cats’ first-team defense Saturday at the 34th annual Steak Out.

At the 34th annual Steak Out, the Conway Wampus Cats had an opportunity to work out some kinks just under two weeks before the start of the season.

Coach Clint Ashcraft said the team looks good and are ready to start the season.

“We’re fairly healthy and I think our kids are having fun,” he said. “So far, knock on wood, it’s been a good fall camp. We’re looking forward to playing someone else. It’s getting to the point where we’re tired of lining up against each other. We’re really looking forward to Tuesday when we stack up against another opponent.”

On Tuesday, Conway will scrimmage at Morrilton as part of the Arkansas Activities Association annual benefit games.

Ashcraft said it will be an opportunity to see what an opponent brings and how they stack up against an opponent.

Prior to the first game of the season at Springdale Sept. 1, Ashcraft said there are areas of the team he would like to see improve.

“I think we need to improve across the board,” he said. “You want to see better protection for your quarterback and better holds for your backs. We had a few missed tackles tonight. Things like that are things we need to stress. We need to keep working at basic stuff and get better at it.”

At the beginning of fall camp, 70- and 80-degree weather made it seem like practices were being held in midseason.

In contrast, the humid weather at the Steak-Out was more to what Ashcraft and his coaching staff told the team they would likely face the first couple of games.

“The cool weather makes practices better, but you worry about what it will be like the first few Friday nights,” he said. “I think our guys have handled the change in weather really well. We’ve preached when we’ve had those warm days, we need it. Don’t dread it and don’t let it bother you because you may play in a couple of those.”

Conway starts its 2017 campaign Sept. 1 at Springdale.

The Wampus Cats host Jonesboro in their home opener Sept. 8.
