State roundup: St. Joseph first Faulkner team to reach state title game

St. Joseph continued a surge toward a state baseball championship while Greenbrier and Vilonia continued their collision course to another final matchup in softball Saturday.


The Bulldogs defeated Camden Harmony Grove, 7-3, in the semifinals at LePanto to reach the 2A baseball title game this weekend at Baum Stadium at Fayetteville.

The Bulldogs will play Spring Hill, which edged Palestine Wheatley, 10-9.

At Sherwood, Greenbrier’s softball team batted around, scoring 10 runs in the first two innings to coast to a 13-0 victory over Sylvan Hills. The Lady Panthers will take on Valley View in Monday’s 5A semifinal.

In the other semifinal, Vilonia will play DeQueen. The Faulkner County teams played for the state title last season with Vilonia winning its second straight title.

Saturday night, Vilonia's baseball team joined Greenbrier in the 5A's final four with a 10-7 victory over White Hall in eight innings. The Eagles will play Little Rock Christian at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the semifinals at Sherwood.

Friday, Riverside eliminated Mayflower from the 3A baseball tournament at Harrison with a 12-2 victory.

UCA’s Anderson SLC’s Student-Athlete of the Year

University of Central Arkansas junior volleyball player Samantha Anderson has been named the Southern Conference’s Student-Athlete of the Year, while senior Megan Nash earned First Team all-conference honors and sophomore Elizabeth Armstrong was named to the Second Team.
