Toad Suck Daze to have pro boxing

During Toad Suck Daze weekend, Conway will have its first professional boxing match May 6 at the Brick Room in downtown Conway.

Dubbed “The Conway Showdown,” Gillespie Boxing owner Rodney Gillespie is continuing to put the card together after arranging amateur fight cards in the past.

“This started off as a dream,” he said. “I’ve done about eight amateur shows in Conway, and recently, I was asked by a parent if I had ever thought about doing a professional fight card. I didn’t think I could do it, but with help from others, here we are.”

Gillespie said the card could have from six to nine professional bouts from lightweight, which are fighters weighing 135 pounds, to heavyweight bouts, which have no weight limit.

Gillespie said two of his fighters, Skyler Thompson and Mario Lozano Lobatos, will be fighting on the card.

Thompson will participate in his second professional fight, while Lobatos will make his professional debut.

Gillespie said this is his first professional card promotion before he will promote a title bout in June in Little Rock, featuring World Boxing Council lightweight champion and Little Rock native Rashad Ganaway.

Weigh-ins and a meet and greet for “The Conway Showdown” card will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 5 at Buffalo Wild Wings in Conway.

General admission tickets to the “Showdown” is $25, while VIP seating costs $100 and a table of four costs $600.

Doors open at the Brick Room in downtown Conway at 4 p.m. with the first bout starting at 6 p.m.

Tickets are currently on sale and can be picked up at Gillespie Boxing gym at 1101 Markham Street in Conway.
