McCollum’s Column: Clarksville radio guys, traveling grandparents and NCAA brackets

Some March tourney items compose this batch of “David Citations,” for the interesting, weird and just plain zany in sports:

Clarksville Guys on the airwaves: Within an hour of each other Friday, Clarksville native Steve Owens (voice of the UCA Sugar Bears) and Clarksville native Chuck Barrett (voice of the Arkansas Razorbacks) did play by play for their teams in the NCAA basketball tournament.

Traveling Grandparents of the Year: Martin and Sandra Harpole, the grandparents of UCA Sugar Bear Maggie Proffitt who live in West Point, Miss., have missed only two of the 124 games Proffitt has played for UCA. One was when Sandra’s mother was ill and the other was when Martin had a pacemaker put it. They traveled more than 690 miles to watch Proffitt close her UCA career in the NCAA regional at Austin, Texas. They traveled 17,000 miles, including two flights, last season and 15,000 miles, including three flights, this season.

Most Unpolitically Correct Matchup: For the Arkansas 4A state girls basketball championship: Pottsville Lady Apaches vs. Pocahontas Lady Redskins.

Back to back challenges: In two straight games, the UCA Sugar Bears played Texas, the fifth winningest women’s basketball program in the country and Stephen F. Austin, which is No. 8.

Bears’ Final Four: The UCA men’s basketball team played four teams this season that made the NCAA tourney — Wisconsin, Michigan, Oklahoma State and New Orleans.

Toughest decision for Arkansas basketball fans: For the St. Patrick’s Day game against Seton Hall and UCA against Texas, whether to wear red or green or purple. Many compromised with red and purple shirts and green beads.

Best Side Debate for an NCAA Tourney Game: In the first-round matchup, whether Northwestern or Vanderbilt had produced the most famous and best sports writers.

It’s How You Finish: USC led just 76 seconds in its first-round victory over SMU.

Most Mundane Start: Few exciting games and no buzzer beaters during the first two days of the NCAA tournament, possibly the most ho-hum beginning. For example, after the first two days of the tournament on the ESPN bracket contest, there was only one perfect bracket in 2015 and none last year. This year, going into the round of 32, there were 164 perfect brackets out of 18 million submitted.

Best scheduling for Sunday church attendance in Arkansas: The Razorbacks vs. North Carolina at 5:10 p.m.
