UCA’s Howard makes SLC first team

Three years and three Southland Conference postseason awards for University of Central Arkansas guard Jordan Howard, who was named Monday to the All-SLC first team.

Howard, a junior guard from Chandler, Ariz., was named to the first team, while teammate Derreck Brooks was an honorable mention selection.

Howard was the SLC Freshman of the Year in 2015 and a first-team All-SLC selection last season. He is third in the conference in scoring at 19.5 points per game, leads the league in 3-pointers made (school-record 101) and is first in free-throw percentage (88.7 percent). In league games only, Howard is No. 2 in scoring (21.0), No. 1 in three-pointers made (60), No. 2 in three-point percentage (47.2 percent) and No. 2 in free-throw percentage (86.5 percent).

Howard, who was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American last week, set two school records this season, including career three-pointers (273) and season three-pointers (101), which breaks his own record of 96 set last season. He also owns the sixth-best mark with 77 three-pointers as a freshman. With a season remaining, Howard has moved into fourth in career scoring at UCA with 1,626 points.

Howard has scored in double figures in 84 of his 88 career games at UCA, and has made at least one three-pointer in 86 of 88 games. He has made at least one three-point basket in 71 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 13, 2015.

Brooks, a senior from Portland, Ore., is UCA’s second-leading scorer at 13.8 points per game and leading rebounder at 7.1 per game. He is 12th in scoring, ninth in rebounding, 11th in assists and 10th in blocked shots in the SLC.

Brooks was the SLC Newcomer of the Year in 2015-16. Brooks has scored 752 points, pulled down 389 rebounds, handed out 166 assists and recorded 56 steals and 57 blocked shots, which is 10th all-time at UCA.
