Conway Corp accepts submissions for annual creative contest

Students throughout Conway have a chance to compete in the fifth annual Conway Corp Poster, Essay and Video Contest coming up.

Submissions for the 2017 theme, “My Life, Powered by Conway Corp,” should be turned in by 5 p.m. Sept. 15 and can be given to participating teachers or to Conway Corp by mail at Energy Smart Contest, P.O. Box 99, Conway, Arkansas 72033, shared via Google Docs or through email at marketing@myconwaycorp.tv.

Winners will be announced in October to celebrate Public Power Week.

Public Relations Coordinator Jeff Matthews, who is in his third year of participating in the event, said the contest originally started as a way get students to think about how they use energy and how they can find ways of conserving it.

“[Through] the years, it has evolved into all of the services that we offer at Conway Corp and how energy is a part of each of those,” he said.

Matthews said there are specific guidelines when students are deciding what to submit. He said pre-K through fourth grade students can compete in the poster contest.

“Students should use their imagination to create a drawing with crayons, markers, colored pencils or paints to illustrate the contest theme,” Matthews said. “Entries will be judged on creativity and representation of theme.”

Fifth through 12th grade students in Conway have the opportunity to take part in one of two contests: essay or video.

Matthews said essays should be between 500-1,000 words on the theme and will be judged on content and syntax.

The video portion, which is new this year, he said, should be between 30 seconds and two minutes with a video quality of 1080p or higher and must be an original work with no copyrighted material, including music and images, or trademarks like company names, logos, brands.

“I love seeing the way that the students begin to think of Conway Corp and the unique relationship that our company has with the city,” Matthews said. “Most adults understand, but it’s fun to see that click with the students also.”

He said through the project, students start to understand that Conway Corp is a part of their lives in many different ways and that knowing how energy is used in all aspects of their lives is important.
