Conway woman charged with first-degree murder in son’s death

A Conway woman was arrested Saturday morning in connection with the death of her son.

Jessie Mae Johnson, 55, is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of her 38-year-old son Christopher Helms, Conway Police Department spokesman LaTresha Woodruff said in a news release.

“It happened at a home on Appalachian Drive,” she said. “According to witnesses Johnson became upset when Helms cursed her. She went to the kitchen, got a knife, returned and stabbed him.”

Woodruff said Johnson was holding her son in her arms and she and her daughter were administering CPR to Helms when officers arrived on the scene.

Helms later died from his injuries.

“Detectives say alcohol may have played a role in this incident,” Woodruff said.

Johnson was being held in the Faulkner County Detention Center without bail as of Saturday afternoon, according to online records.

No court date was available.
