Shots fired during basketball scuffle at 5th Avenue Park

Shots were fired during a scuffle at a Conway park basketball court on Wednesday, according to an incident report released this morning.

According to the report, an officer responded to 5th Avenue Park at about 6:30 Wednesday afternoon and talked to a man who said he was one of 15 or 20 people playing basketball on the court, which is incorporated into the park’s main parking lot off 5th Avenue. A fight broke out between two men who had been playing basketball, the man said, and then two shots were heard coming from a gold-colored Chevrolet Impala headed south on 5th Avenue near Vine Street.

According to Google maps, the intersection of 5th and Vine is about 500 feet from the basketball court.

The man said that the Impala drove past the court and turned around, firing two more shots as it passed the court headed north on 5th Avenue —which would put the shooter about 100 feet from the court.

Everyone scattered, the man said, and no one seemed to have been shot, according to the report. The officer found one 9mm shell casing on 5th Avenue parallel to the basketball court and logged it as evidence.

Anyone with evidence is urged to contact CPD at 450-6120 or text an anonymous tip to 274-637 (CRI-MES) and use the keyword “Conway.”
