Wampus Cats prevail in 7-on-7 tournament

LITTLE ROCK — Conway defeated Sylvan Hills, 30-14, Thursday to win the Division I championship at the Summer Showdown 7- on-7 football tournament at Pulaski Robinson High School.

 

The Cats defeated Pine Bluff, 56-28, in the semifinals and Little Rock Central in the quarterfinals to win one of the first major 7-on-7 events of the summer.

The Wampus Cats were 3-0 in pool play at the Sonic Air Raid tournament last week before the event was called off because of thunderstorms.

Eventual champion Pulaski Robinson downed Conway Christian, 39-30, in the Division II (smaller school) quarterfinals. CCS downed Marion, 26-13, in the quarterfinals.

Greenbrier reached the Division I quarterfinals, losing to Sylvan Hills, 37-21.

In pool play, Conway defeated Little Rock Christian, 40-28; Bryant, 27-23; and Greenbrier, 45-35.

CCS lost to Robinson in pool play, 23-20, then lost to Bauxite, 34-28, before downing Fordyce, 36-18.

Greenbrier opened pool play by downing Bryant, 20-16, and LR Christian, 43-19, before losing to Conway. Malvern defeated the Greenbrier JV in pool play, 45-32.
