Andrew Sykes Jr., 37, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jermaine Tyus, the man found dying near Lake Conway last month.

Prosecuting attorney Cody Hiland announced Wednesday that Sykes had been arrested based on a charge of hindering apprehension, a felony, and from there the investigation led to the murder charge. The investigation is ongoing, Hiland said.

Faulkner County Sheriff Andy Shock said the Conway Police Department assisted in the investigation that resulted in the arrest.

“We’re very pleased to be able to file these charges today,” he said. “Our guys worked tirelessly to follow up on any and all leads and put in many hours. This is one of those cases where it’s not an open and shut case.”

He confirmed that Tyus was shot execution-style in what was apparently “a very planned, plotted scheme.” He said the victim and the suspect apparently had a disagreement “in regards to some illegal activity.”

According to information provided at a press conference Wednesday, two witnesses were with Sykes and Tyus in a car before the shooting, and Sykes made a motion like he was going to shoot Tyus. Shock said investigators have the events narrowed down to about 40 minutes from the time the two witnesses left the car to the time a 911 call came in reporting Tyus being found on the side of the road.

The case is not eligible for the death penalty, as it is not a capital murder case. Hiland said the evidence is sufficient to support first-degree murder.
