Those looking to hit the road for Memorial Day weekend will have two ways to save when filling up at the pump.

Local Kroger and Walmart stores are offering two fuel incentive programs for the summer travel season.

Walmart is giving customers the option to save an additional 15 cents per gallon with its Walmart Gas Rollback option, and Kroger is giving customers two times the fuel points when they shop on the weekends.

AAA Travel projects 36.1 million Americans, a new post-recession high, will travel 50 miles or more from home this weekend, a 1.5 percent increase from the 35.5 million who traveled last year.

Kicking off the summer driving season, more than eight in 10 travelers will be driving to their destinations, AAA says.

The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, May 22 to Monday, May 26.

According to Gasbuddy.com, Arkansas currently has the lowest gas prices in the nation with an average of $3.36 a gallon.

Although on the decline from a recent peak, gas prices in Arkansas have risen by about 30 cents per gallon since January, according to Gasbuddy.com.

Walmart and Kroger are helping customers save more money for summer fun by knocking off cents on the gallon.

Walmart’s Great Gas Rollback began May 18 and will run through September 8.

Walmart customers can save in one of five ways. Drivers can save 15 cents when using a Walmart credit card, Walmart MoneyCard, Associate Pay Card or new this year, Walmart’s Bluebird by AmEx Card at participating Walmart and Murphy USA stations.

Drivers also have the option to save 10 cents per gallon when using a Walmart gift card.

Last year, Walmart customers pumped 975 million gallons of gas using the Great Gas Rollback, saving more than $98 million.

With Kroger’s 2X Fuel Point Weekends, customers can earn double the fuel points when they shop on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through July 27.

Customers must have a Kroger Plus Card. The incentive is available through paper coupons obtained at the store upon check out or Plus Card members can go online and digitally load the coupon to their Kroger Plus Card account.

For each 100 points accumulated, customers can save 10 cents per gallon up to $1 per gallon. Each month is a separate accumulation period and points per month cannot be combined.

Fuel Points can be redeemed at Kroger Fuel Centers and participating Shell fuel stations.
