Noah and Sophia are the most popular baby names nationally. Sophia has been the most popular girls name for the past three years. Noah replaces the name Jacob, which has been the most popular boys name since 1999.

William and Emma were the most popular baby names in Arkansas last year, according to the Social Security Administration.

Thursday, the SSA announced the most frequent given names for male and female births in 2013 based on Social Security card application data.

The top five boys and girls names in Arkansas in 2013 were:

Boys:

1. William (193)

2. Mason (185)

3. Noah (158)

4. James (147)

5. Elijah (137)

Girls:

1. Emma (212)

2. Olivia (155)

3. Ava (140)

4. Isabella (128)

5. Sophia (127)

Noah and Sophia are the most popular baby names nationally. Sophia has been the most popular girls name for the past three years. Noah replaces the name Jacob, which has been the most popular boys name since 1999.

The agency began compiling the baby name list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880.

At the time of a child’s birth, parents supply the name to the agency when applying for a child’s Social Security card, thus making Social Security America’s source for the most popular baby names.
