Posted: April 17, 2014 - 7:28pm

Area 17 Special Olympics recently held its annual area Track and Field meet at Conway High School.

Organizers said 325 athletes were present for the games, about 75 more than the usual number.

The games were between athletes in the five-county area from Faulkner, Pope, Van Buren, Perry and Conway counties.

Brenda Dowdy, games management team volunteer, said local police officers were at the event for its duration to announce games and to place medals on athletes.

Local groups volunteering or providing sponsorship were University of Central Arkansas fraternities and sororities, and the school’s physical therapy students.

Kohl’s representatives volunteered at the concession stand, Dowdy said.

Special Olympics state games will be held at Harding University in Searcy beginning Thursday, May 22, with the opening ceremonies.

Games continue through Saturday.

Sporting events will be track and field, baseball, volleyball, bowling, swimming and bocce.
