UCA Opera Theatre schedules April performances

Posted: March 28, 2014 - 6:28pm

The University of Central Arkansas Opera Theatre students will present two programs of opera in April.

Opera Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. April 3-6 in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall and will include Samuel Barber’s A Hand of Bridge, Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone and Seymour Barab’s La Pizza con Funghi.  With set changes and intermission, the performance will last about two hours, 15 minutes.

Opera Scenes, comprising a series of scenes from various operas, without costumes, sets or any orchestra accompaniment, will run for about an hour beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 13 in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

All events are free and open to the public.

“It should be a delightful evening of opera that the entire family can enjoy and appreciate, “ said Dr. Robert Holden, professor of music and director of the UCA Opera Theatre. “The audience is encouraged to come and see both casts perform as each cast gives its own flavor to the interpretation.”

Students from the UCA Department of Music enrolled in the UCA Opera Theatre will perform each role. There are two casts for each opera, giving many students the opportunity to perform. Dr. Jackie Lamar, professor of saxophone, will be the guest conductor for one of the operas. She will conduct a saxophone /percussion ensemble for the opera, A Hand of Bridge.

“The music is pleasant and fun,” Holden said. “The content is light and fun, and the music is energetic and will be well sung by the cast. We look forward to presenting this to the UCA and Conway community.” For more information contact, Holden at 501-450-5762 or at roberth@uca.edu.
