Conway police arrested 29-year-old Ashley Burch, of Conway, Tuesday after a six-year-old child in her care received severe burns on her stomach and legs, according to police.
Officers responded to Conway Regional Medical Center's emergency department Monday in reference to a six-year-old female with severe burns from her belly button to her mid-thigh, according to a Conway Police Department incident report.
The report states the child first told hospital staff she received the burns when she was walking home from school and fell into a ditch.
She later, out of Burch's presence, told hospital staff Burch poured hot water on her as a punishment after accusing her of stealing Burch's jewelry.
La Tresha Woodruff, Conway Police Department public information officer, said Wednesday the child has second degree burns and is recovering in the hospital.
Burch is being held without bond on felony counts of first degree domestic batter and endangering the welfare of a minor.
Woodruff said the child referred to Burch as her mother, but Burch lives with the child and the child's biological mother.
