An 18-year-old male student was found dead around 8 a.m. Wednesday in a Hughes Hall residential restroom at the University of Central Arkansas.
UCA police officers, Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) and the Conway Fire Department responded to a report of an unconscious male in the restroom, the UCA Police Department said in a statement.
Faulkner County Coroner Patrick Moore identified the student as Jaykwantay Girley. Moore said an autopsy has been ordered to determine Girley’s cause of death.
“There is no indication of foul play,” Moore said. “We have not gotten any medical history that could account for his death.”
Results of the autopsy are hoped to be obtained tomorrow, Moore said.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to the family,” President Tom Courtway said in a university statement. “We need to remember them in our thoughts and prayers.”
Pastor Cornell Maltbia and Student Health Clinic counselors will visit with Hughes Hall residents at 6 p.m. tonight, the university said.
Fellow UCA freshman Ryan Babbs met Girley during the moving-in week in Hughes Hall, lived two doors down from him, and played on the same intramural football team.
“He pretty much put a smile on everybody’s faces,” Babbs said. “Always enjoying himself, always having a good time.
“We had a lot of fun playing football, but he was always focused on his grades and schoolwork, too, and always handled his business in the classroom … I wasn’t expecting this at all.”
