One of the hallmarks of the Annual Bookcase Literacy Banquet is to have quality, local entertainment. This year will be no exception. Following in the footsteps of The Jason Rapert Gospel Bluegrass Band, The Ward Family Singers, The Conway High School Jazz Band, select members of the Conway Symphony Orchestra and the Conway Women’s Chorus, will be Dr. Bill Higgs, a multi-talented local dentist who performs as Ukulele Bill. Get ready for some great fun as “Ukulele Bill” performs in pinstripe pants, suspenders, a white shirt with pleats, and a straw hat — a 1900’s costume he ordered from the Internet.
In addition to playing, Bill also sings, and while singing — with a smooth, deep voice — he plucks away on his ukulele as he performs songs from various decades. He has a broad range of offerings from Hawaiian to current songs. Between songs he talks about the history of the ukulele. His philosophy is simple. He says, “I just want to keep thinking of things to do to keep it fun.” This is what you can expect when you attend the Sixth Annual Bookcase Literacy Banquet on Thursday, Oct. 17, 6:30 p.m. at the Bob Courtway Middle School Cafeteria.
The cost is $15.95 per ticket or a table of 8 for $125, a great value in today’s economy. Each table will have a sign that says “Compliments of” followed by the sponsor’s name. Each person who attends receives a delicious meal of Petit Jean Smoked Sausage (cooked on the grill), spaghetti, kraut, slaw, corn, and home-made desserts, along with the entertainment and a complimentary copy of the Founder’s book, “New Revised Edition of Learning, Earning & Giving Back.” Tickets are available at the Log Cabin Democrat, Faulkner County Library, Conway Copies or by calling Jim Davidson: 450-7743, Stanley Russ: 329-8186, Dr. Tammy Benson: 501-852-2965 or Judy Lovell: 327-7482.
The Conway Bookcase Project began in 2005 and is an all-volunteer, committee led, project committed to providing quality, personalized bookcases, and a starter set of “pre-school” books to children from low-income families in our community. This project is all about “Giving Back” and no person earns a penny for their time or contribution. The bookcases and books are awarded to these children at the Annual Awards Ceremony that takes place in April at the Faulkner County Library. Since the project began they have provided 450 of these bookcases to children in the local Head Start program and the Conway Housing Authority.
Committee members include: Jim Davidson; Chairman; Linda Linn, Mickey Cox, Stanley Russ, Dr. Tammy Benson, Cliff Garrison, Ruth Voss, Mary Boyd, Dr. Larry Pillow, Archie Musselman, Dr. Charlotte Green, Judy Lovell, Dr. Amanda Moore and Nancy Mitchell.
Anyone who has pre-school children’s books can bring them to the banquet. To learn more about the project, visit our website: www.bookcaseforeverychild.com
