For the first time in 53 years, the Hendrix Warriors took to the football field Saturday afternoon.
Several former Hendrix football players came to celebrate the resuscitation of the football program. George Stewart and Derwin Ball — who played for the Warriors from 1946 to 1950 — said they were excited about the game.
Byron Myrick — who was a Warrior halfback in 1955 — traveled from Texas with his wife Norma Ruth to see Saturday’s game.
“I’m glad they’re doing it,” he said of Hendrix’s football program. “I’m also glad the focus is still academics.”
Alumni gathered near the football field for some pre-game tailgating. Anna Morshedi from the class of 2005 said she was excited so many alumni could now experience tailgating on their campus.
“I think it’s an exciting new chapter for Hendrix,” she said.
