Store owner Cathy French is citing health problems as the reason she has decided to close Thrifty Spender Flea Market, four miles east of Conway on Foxmoor Circle.
French said she has truly enjoyed getting got to know each and every one of her customers over the past three years, and is very thankful that God has given her the opportunity to have a successful business in her senior years.
“There have been customers who were easy to love and there were those that kept me laughing,” she said. “Some would just look around and not want to talk much, but then, there were those that would break your heart with their stories. This gave me the opportunity to pray with and for some of my customers.”
French worked to achieve her dream of owning her own flea market by attending computer education classes at the Conway Adult Education Center, and renting space from other flea markets until she found a space of her own.
The computer classes gave her the necessary skills to run her own business.
French bought and sold merchandise in booths she rented at local flea markets while attending class, but none of them gave her the space she needed to showcase furniture.
French has a passion for “staging” and “re-designing” furniture.
When she started renting the 1,200 square foot home of Thrifty Spender Flea Market in July 2010, it quickly grew to 4,000 square feet, enabling French to arrange her furniture to show people how great gently-used, quality furniture could look in their homes.
“The displays now show the beauty of the merchandise, and this makes for a more enjoyable shopping atmosphere,” she said.
French has sold a little bit of everything from gas grills and TVs to blue jeans and books, but her biggest seller is furniture. She has bedroom suites, living room sets, office furniture, dining and kitchen ensembles and patio furniture.
“Everything’s going to go,” French said. “I wanted to sell the whole store, but wasn’t able to find someone who was financially able.”
Thrifty Spender Flea Market will be open each Friday and Saturday in September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until all merchandise is liquidated. Their going out of business sale begins Friday, September 6. There will be great bargains with yard sale pricing, French said.
“Don’t miss the big bargains,” she said. “They won’t last at these prices and quality.”
Photos of the furniture can be found at the flea market’s website www.facebook.com/thriftyspender. The store is located at 444 Highway 64 E., five miles east of Conway Commons. French can be reached at (501) 548-0240 or (501) 339-4538.
